This is a close look at the rare Impatiens 'Pink Slippers', an awesome, new hybrid of two "Parrot Impatiens" species - the yellow Impatiens clavicalcar, and the red & yellow Impatiens niamniamensis. All year long it puts out tons of these unusual blossoms, and it looks like little, pink parrots are swarming around the plant! This is a great collector's plant that would make a unique show plant. It is extremely rare in cultivation. I don't know anyone else offering it.
This is a perennial plant that grows about 15-20 inches tall. It has an upright, tree-like shape and rigid stems, similar to the parent plants. It blooms practically non-stop all year long! The large flowers appear in clusters that emerge straight off the main stem, not just from the new growth like many Impatiens. The watermelon-colored blooms are 1½ inches tall and shaped somewhat like a seahorse. You may cross-breed the plant with either parent species, or to a few other Impatiens, to create new hybrids!
It grows well between about 55 and 80 degrees F (13-27°C). I haven't tested it outside that temperature range and recommend caution if you do. I suspect that hot days with warm nights might stress it, as well as cold conditions. It grows well in a pot in bright, filtered light. Protect it from strong afternoon sun. Like most Impatiens, it enjoys fertile, well-draining soil that's kept evenly moist. It appreciates humidity over 50%. In the right conditions, it's very easy to grow.
