This is a close look at the spectacular, rare Fuchsia fulgens subsp. grandiflora - the "Brilliant Fuchsia". Its slender, 4 inch flowers are ridiculously long - one of the longest of all Fuchsias! The plant blooms throughout the year, with vivid, pinkish-red blossoms that are followed by edible, purple fruit. This is a choice plant for both Fuchsia fans and rare plant collectors. I don't know any other source for fresh seeds.
The plant forms an evergreen bush about 3 to 4 feet tall and wide - slightly smaller than the main form of Fuchsia fulgens. Its lush, rounded leaves are unusually large for Fuchsias, which makes an attractive backdrop for the flowers. The heaviest show of blooms is during summer, but the plant can have flowers on it most months of the year. The blooms are longer and more slender than the main species. They are followed by lightly-sweet fruit with a flavor somewhat like apples. The plant may be cross-bred with some related Fuchsia species, which should create some interesting hybrids!
Like most Fuchsia species, it prefers mild daytime temperatures and cool nights. It can tolerate warm days provided that nights are cool. I don't know if it will thrive if temperatures regularly get above 85 degrees F (29 C) and nights are above 65 degrees F (18 C). I also don't know if it can survive temperatures below freezing. It enjoys filtered sunlight, and should be given protection from strong afternoon sun. It grows well in a pot in a well-draining soil that is kept moist, similar to other Fuchsias. Over about 40-50% humidity is recommended. In the right conditions, it is easy to grow. This species is resistant to Fuchsia mites.
